INTRODUCTION
VINCE LEE & THE BIG COMBO were given the
chance to record this session by the Plymouth Musicians Co-operative in an
attempt to bring their music to a wider audience. The songs were carefully
chosen from the bands live set and laid down onto 16 track analog tape by
P.M.C engineer Doc Collins. Vince spent the next 12 months working closely
with Doc to give each song the attention it deserves, using an array of vintage equipment to create the desired tones (Gretsch
& Epiphone semi acoustic guitars through Fender and Gibson tube amps, mixed
with Fender electric bass and Arbiter maple drums). It’s all there; blues,
jazz, swing, awesome guitar playing, passionate vocals and a rhythm section
that always understands its place in the music. As a title for the album, “Call it what ya' wanna!” sums the whole thing up very succinctly.
You can call it the blues, or R & B, or Jazz, or swing or you can call it a
bunch of damn fine tunes played by one of the best live bands around,
regardless of genre. That’s Vince Lee & the Big Combo.
